This immersive itinerary blends panoramic views, steelpan rhythms, and authentic cuisine for travelers seeking a little nature, history, and island magic.

Locations

Port of Spain

Port of Spain, on Trinidad’s northwest coast, is the vibrant capital of Trinidad and Tobago. Famous for its carnival—second only to Rio’s and loved for its lively, safe atmosphere—the city pulses with energy year-round.

A bustling hub since 1757, Port of Spain is perfect for a couple of days of exploration. Shop along Frederick and Charlotte Streets, from lively stores to street stalls selling everything from fresh fruit to local music.

As evening falls, Independence Square comes alive with locals liming—chatting, sampling street food, and soaking up the city’s rhythm. It’s the perfect way to feel the heart and soul of Trinidad.

  • Valid Passport: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of arrival.
  • Proof of Onward/Return Travel: You will likely be asked to show a confirmed return ticket or a ticket to another destination at the immigration counter.
  • Visa (If Applicable):
    • Visa-Free: Citizens of the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and the European Union (among others) typically do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days.
    • Visa Required: If you are from a country not on the exempt list, you may need to apply for an eVisa or a physical visa at a consulate before traveling.
  • Proof of Funds: Technically, immigration officers can ask for proof that you have sufficient funds (cash or credit card) to support yourself during your stay.
  • Accommodation Details: It’s a good idea to have your hotel reservation or the address of your host ready for your entry forms.

2. Currency and Payments

  • Official Currency: The Trinidad and Tobago Dollar (TTD), usually written as TT$.
  • Exchange Rate: The rate is relatively stable at approximately $1 USD to TT$6.70–$6.80.
  • Cash is King (mostly): While large hotels, supermarkets, and upscale restaurants in urban areas accept major credit cards (Visa and Mastercard are most common), cash is essential for:
    • Local "maxi-taxis" and street food (like world-famous Doubles!).
    • Small shops and craft markets.
    • Local bars and smaller establishments in Tobago.
  • ATMs: You can find ATMs (Scotiabank, Republic Bank, First Citizens) in major towns and at the airports. They generally dispense TTD.
  • Using USD: Some tourist-heavy areas or large vendors may accept US Dollars, but you will almost always get a better "local" price and correct change by using TT$.

3. Quick Travel Tips

  • Yellow Fever: If you are traveling from a country with a high risk of Yellow Fever, you may be required to show an International Certificate of Vaccination.
  • Declaration: You must declare any currency (local or foreign) over the equivalent of $5,000 USD when entering or leaving the country.

Weather:

  • Hot & humid year-round (30–33°C / 86–91°F)
  • Dry season: Jan–May (best time to visit)
  • Wet season: Jun–Dec (short rains, lush scenery)
  • Pack light clothes, sunblock, insect repellent & a rain jacket
