Highlights and Important Remarks

Valid Passport: Must be valid for at least six months beyond your departure date from Guyana.
Visa Check: Confirm if you need a visa based on your nationality. US, Canadian, and UK citizens usually do not need one for short tourist stays.
Proof of Exit: Have a confirmed return or onward flight ticket.
Yellow Fever Certificate: Highly recommended and often required if arriving from risk countries. It must be administered at least 10 days prior to entry.
Accommodation Proof: Keep a copy of your hotel or lodge reservation details.

Official Currency: The Guyanese Dollar
Widely Accepted: The US Dollar is accepted by hotels and tour operators in Georgetown.
Cash is Essential: You must carry Guyanese Dollars for small shops, taxis, market vendors, and especially for all transactions outside of Georgetown (jungle lodges, remote areas).
Cards (Limited Use): Credit cards (Visa/MasterCard) are accepted at major hotels and restaurants in Georgetown only. Do not rely on them elsewhere.
ATMs: Available in Georgetown and at the airport. Withdraw in the city before travelling to the interior.

Long-Sleeved Shirts and Trousers:
Choose lightweight, quick-dry, synthetic fabrics (like nylon or performance material) over cotton, as cotton stays wet in the humidity.
Essential for protection from the sun, scratches, and insects (especially mosquitoes).
Pack neutral colours (khaki, tan, grey, sage green) as bright or dark colours can attract certain bugs.
Sturdy Footwear:
Broken-in hiking boots with good ankle support and tread are essential for slippery, muddy trails.
Many lodges provide rubber/Wellington boots for the muddiest treks, but bring your own comfortable pair for other walks.
Socks: High-quality, mid-calf or knee-length moisture-wicking hiking socks to wear with your boots.
Rain Gear: A lightweight, packable waterproof jacket or poncho is an absolute necessity due to the frequent, sudden tropical downpours.
Loose-Fitting Clothes: Light cotton or linen tops, skirts, or dresses are comfortable for sightseeing in Georgetown or relaxing at the lodge.
Swimwear: A swimsuit for river dips or lodge pools.
Casual Shoes: Sandals or flip-flops for around the camp or lodge, allowing your feet to air out.

Head Protection: A wide-brimmed hat for sun and rain protection on the river and trails.
Insect Repellent: High-quality repellent, preferably with DEET, for exposed skin. Consider treating clothing with Permethrin before you go.
Headlamp or Flashlight: Essential, as electricity can be limited in the interior (a headlamp with infrared light function is best as it attracts fewer insects).
Daypack: A small, comfortable backpack, ideally with a rain cover, for carrying water, camera, and binoculars on excursions.
